This is a remarkable true story. In the 1970s, Mike Feistel took to the rails and traveled across America. During his travels, he crossed paths with a fifteen year old homeless boy, Curtis, who had been thrown out of his mother's home by her abusive, alcoholic boyfriend. When Mike and Curtis cross paths at the rescue mission in Yakima, Washington, Curtis pleads with Mike to help him get back to his father's house in Dallas, Texas.

I am a 68 yr old woman, not particularly a "fan" of trains but I do like to read all different kinds of stories. This book was actually as good as its description! I enjoyed it very much and it gave me a different perspective on these "train hobos". I had no idea people rode the trains because they WANTED to and loved the freedom and excitement of riding the rails.

Michael writes very well and his story was not over descriptive or laden with curses. Saw just a couple of typos until the last few chapters of the book when typos and missing words started popping up like someone was tired of typing but it just made you "pause" over the sentence for a second. It didn't interfer with the story at all.

YES, I would recommend this book to others and, in fact, I have already done so. I've saved it in my "Read-KEEP" Book Collection Folder on my Kindle so that I have the name of it to share it with others and the author's name to watch for more books from him.

This is about hobos in present day America. Until I read this book I thought hobos were a thing of the past. Not so they are still out there traveling across America. This gives,a true account of life as a hobo that's far from the image people might have
This was the best book I have read in a long time. I read it in one day because I could not put it down. The book leaves you wanting to go experience this adventure for yourself and leaves you wanting to read more and not wanting the book to end. I cannot wait for another book to come out. It's a whole different life and adventure that I have never been in before and loved feeling like I was actually right in the middle of it. Michael has a way of captivating his audience and keeping them on the edge of their seat. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book to anyone!!!!! Two big thumbs up!!!!!
Feistel has written an extremely engaging and fun to read adventure about life on "the rails." When I began the book I didn't know what to expect but was drawn into the life he so imaginatively creates and describes. There is adventure, excitement, drama, and some great moral lessons that would make the world a better place if people lived them. A great, fun read. And when you are finished you yearn for the opportunity to experience some of your own "Clickey-clack"!
I LOVED this book! It drew me in right from the beginning. Mike made me feel like I was riding the rail along with him. When the book was nearing the end, you could see how Curtis had matured along the way. It was such a selfless gesture for Mike to make, in taking Curtis home to his father. What a loving and generous person Mike truly is. Its a very true and unbelievable life adventure. Such a Great journey, to have gotten to experience. Mike did a Great job of capturing his true life story in a book. When the end came, I just wanted it to go on and on. I surely hope he writes another life adventure story for all of us to read. I'm so glad he shared his life experience with us. So I'll be waiting patiently Mike for the next one. Good Writing!!
When you start reading this book it is very hard to put down. This book gives you a whole different look on life. It is a real life account of compassion, giving and respect. The descriptions of the people and places aren't real detailed, but you have no trouble "seeing" it all and putting yourself right there with them. I admire Mike for writing about his life experiences. In meeting him, I saw immediately what a kind and humble person he truly is. I hope he will write another book and share more of his life adventures with us.
I had no idea railroad hobos exist today. My husband is a railroad shipper, and he verified it. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this way of life. Although the book can use an editor for grammar and punctuation, it is a heartfelt and interesting read. It certainly gives me a different perspective on people who live this way. Thank you, Mike, for sharing this adventure!
This book is a winner. I read it start to finish, could not put it down. To get the inner picture of the life of a "hobo" was interesting. My grandfather was a brakeman on the railroad and shared stories about these men and women who lived to ride the rails, a life of total freedom, tho not without danger and hard times. This story centers on a simple man who took an abused child under his wings and helped him to get home to his Dad. My only fault that I found was you didn't find out if the young man got back to his Dad, but it is a great story and well worth the read.
