Baseball Book by a Baseball Fan
I thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Johnson's book. As an avid Sox fan, reading this book brought back many memories, some good, some bad of the three years covered.The author's attention to detail and accuracy was most rewarding for this reader. I particularly liked the inclusion of several of Mr. Johnson's baseball blogs previously written for local newspapers. A book of this importance should be read by baseball fans everywhere.
Very good read. I must confess, right off the bat (no pun intended), I am not a member of Red Sox Nation. In fact, I am a New York Yankees fan, but this book held my attention. It is loaded with facts and stats, but with enough asides that it doesn't get boring. Would I have bought it if my father wasn't the author? Probably not, but I have kept an open mind, and if it bored me, I would say so, but it did not. Being a Yankees fan I never really followed all the ins and outs of the Red Sox, but this book brings home exactly what happened, and why they went from worst to first. I would definitely recommend this book to all the "faithful members of Red Sox Nation" who think that their organization is the be all and end all of what defines baseball, but just remember, the Yankees have won a lot more World Series.
Carl's book, From Beer to Beards, is knowledgeable and informative, entertaining and filled with narrative energy.... He tells Red Sox fans not to despair but rather to "Suck it up" and wait till next year, which Brooklyn Dodgers fans used to tell each other and anyone who'd listen back in the late forties and early fifties. Such sensible advice is from a Yankees fan who in his weekly column for the Biddleford Journal Tribune covers the Red Sox....His book is, yes, aimed at baseball fans but also for anyone who appreciates succinct writing....Carl said he wrote the book after closely following Boston's 2011 and 2012 pennant races and then, when "it call came together for the team in 2013," it "was too good a story not to write."
I know Carl Johnson, he's a Yankee fan, but did an excellent job with this book.
